It’s very hard to find any downsides to living in the New Forest or its surrounding areas. However, one such drawback is the occasional necessity to visit one of the larger towns, or even cities, to buy something that does not appear to be available on your own doorstep. A classic example of this is proper gear for those who are serious about sport. Until very recently, I travelled to Southampton, Christchurch or Bournemouth if I wanted a new pair of trainers or tracksuit bottoms. But I am delighted to have finally been introduced to the New Forest Sport Shop.
The shop is owned and run by Paul Brewer and Vincent Hayden who took over the premises nearly 6 years ago. It is a veritable treasure trove of both sportswear and accessories for real sports enthusiasts. Located on the main stretch in New Milton, it attracts a range of customers from runners, training for the next marathon to mummies buying sports essentials before the kids go back to school. It’s perfect both for those who know exactly what they want to buy (just ask if what you’re looking for isn’t immediately visible) and for those who require some help or advice, either Paul or Vincent are ready with a smile and a helping hand.
Open from Monday to Saturday (9am – 5:30pm) they stock running shoes from leading brand names such as Asics, Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Reebok, Saucony and Mizuno. They also sell football boots (Adidas, Nike, Mizuno, Uhlsport), tennis shoes (Wilson & K-Swiss), rugby boots and cricket shoes (Gray Nicolls). Being experts in their field, Paul & Vincent like to ensure that anyone buying sports footwear has a perfect fit so they stock them in half sizes too. (Junior sizes start from a size 1).
Sport specific clothing is available from a plethora of leading brand names: Nike, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance and Asics. Swimwear is available for men, women and kids (even babies can find something to wear in this department) as well selling essential swimming accessories such as floats and goggles. Other miscellaneous items available include Footballs, basketballs, rugby balls, hockey sticks, gumshields, sunglasses (Oakley) and sports bags.
So if you want to avoid the long schlep to Southampton or Christchurch with the inevitable parking problems and trawl around all the sports shops to find what you’re looking for, call in at the New Forest Sport Shop and save yourself the time and the hassle!
